Welcome to our Year 5 webpage.
In term 5, we will be learning about local geography with a focus on human and physical features in our county, including a focus on Avebury, the River Avon, and Wiltshire's only city, Salisbury. In science, we will be exploring the effects of forces, including gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, as well as investigating how levers, pulleys and gears help us to move objects more easily. We will be developing fluency through our Teaching of Reading book, The House with Chicken Legs by Sophie Anderson - one of our favourites in year 5.
Please continue to encourage your child to practice spellings on Emile or Nessy.
Just a reminder that spellings and other homework will be checked on Mondays. If the children have any concerns with this, they can attend Homework Club during Friday lunchtime. Any homework not completed will need to be finished during Tuesday lunchtime. Please can Yellow Reading Diaries be handed in on Thursdays.
We are excited to announce that year 5 will be involved in the new Forest School programme on Friday afternoons this term, which will see the children learn how to build shelters, light and cook on a fire, learn how to identify plants and animals, join in with team-building activities and construct art using natural materials. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and that all clothing is labelled.
Children will need:
- a waterproof coat
- waterproof trousers
- wellies or hiking boots
- warm jumper or fleece (such as a St.Bart's hoodie)
- long-sleeve shirt and long trousers
- sunhat and suncream for sunny days
As a result of our Forest School programme, there will be NO PE on Wednesdays this term. Children will continue to have PE on a Monday.
For all other queries or questions, please speak to us at the classroom door, or send an email to the office and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

This term in maths, Year 5's will revisit fractions. We will learn how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions. We will then use these skills to add and subtract both variations of fractions. Year 5s will finish the term learning how to multiply fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers. Here is this term's knowledge organiser that outlines all the skills we will be using this term.
For geography this term, Year 5's will be learning and studying our local geography in our topic - 'Staying Local'. We will be studying the human and physical features that make up our county, local cities and surrounding areas. We will focus on the rivers, mountains and coastal lines that make up the UK and describe their position in relation to ourselves. Our knowledge organiser outlines our lesson by lesson build of knowledge and all the key vocabulary we will be learning this term.
This term in Science is a physics focus. We will be investigating how forces affect the way objects move - including looking at friction, air and water resistance, and gravity. We will also be exploring different types of levers, gears and pulleys and how these mechanisms are used to help make objects move more easily. As part of the topic, we will be carrying out our own experiments to test our hypotheses in relation to the effects of different forces, and what materials and shapes help to accelerate and decelerate motion.
In English, we will be learning the key features of print journalism, both online and in newspapers. Part of the topic will include planning to write for an audience, as well as a SPAG focus on punctuating reported and direct speech. We will also be practising writing in different verb tenses, including the present perfect form. The topic will culminate with a formal writing episode where children will have the opportunity to demonstrate their new skills.
