Welcome to our Year 1 webpage. This is a place where you can find up to date information about what the children in Robins and Wrens have been up to, and details of events that might be coming up. 

Thank you to those of you who were able to attend the 'Meet the Teacher' session in September; for those who couldn't, please take a moment to scroll through the presentation below to familiarise yourself with Year 1. 

Term 4 - The Great Fire of London

This term, in History we will be learning about the Great Fire of London. We will learn about Samuel Pepys and the diary he wrote, detailing the events in London in 1666. We will learn how the fire started, spread and was eventually extinguished. We will learn how advances in technology and building design prevent similar tragedies from happening today. 

In Science, we will be learning about everyday materials and their properties. We will explore how different materials look, feel and behave, including experimenting to find the most suitable material for an umbrella. 

Our focus stories in English this term are 'The Little Red Hen' and 'The Giant Jam Sandwich'. We will be learning to sequence sentences to form short narratives. 

Term 3 - The United Kingdom

This term our topic is The United Kingdom.

In Geography we will be learning about the four countries of the UK and their capital cities. We will be using our existing knowledge, and introducing some new human and physical features, to help describe what can be seen in each country.

In Science we will be looking at the four seasons and weather. We will be  learning what happens to trees and plants in the winter.

Term 2 - Me and You

This term our topic is 'Me and You'. We will be learning about ourselves and others. 

Our topic book this term are: 

In history this term we are learning how the way humans communicate has changed across time. From the earliest forms of communication (speech), to humans learning to communicate through writing and the invention of technology such as telephones and computers. 

In science this term we are learning about our bodies. We will be naming the parts of our bodies and learning about our five senses. Each week, we will explore how a different sense helps us learn about the world around us. 

Spellings Term 2

Term 1 - The Great Outdoors

Our topic this term is 'The Great Outdoors'. In Science, we will be learning about plants and trees. In Geography, we will be looking at our local environment and asking 'where did that come from?' - learning to distinguish between 'human features' and 'physical features'. 

Our books this term are, The Enormous Turnip and The Shark in the Park.
