On this page you will find links and photos of things we have done recently and what we will be looking forward to in the future.
We will be regularly updating the photos of the learning activities we have got up to, so please come back again soon.
If you would like any further information about the learning we have covered, or the forth-coming learning topics, please don’t hesitate to come and see us. We will also post topic overviews for the term and homework tasks on the classroom noticeboards.
The first term of year 5 and 6 was great. Our topic was 'Reach for the stars' and due to this we did lots of interesting things. We made space putty and we got to design our own space rocket. We filled them up with vinegar and baking powder for the fuel. However when we attempted to launch them, we had no luck! It spurted all over the teachers. That was funny!
We also made a holiday brochure to a planet of our choice, there were lots of good ideas and creative thoughts.
Also we got to taste some space food including: beef jerky , dried strawberries and ice-cream. Once we had tasted
the 5 foods that we chose out of the 8, we made a table to show our predictions, writing in the scent of the food, then the flavour, and finally the texture of what the food was like.
In maths we have been learning a lot of rounding.
A lot of us at the start of this process were finding rounding tricky. Now all of us are confident with rounding. Also in maths we have been practising our addition skills by adding money, solving problems and doing function machines. A lot of us found it a challenge but in the end we got it because we persevered with it and we helped each other out. We have had a fun few weeks.

This term we have been learning about the Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. At the start of term we made door-knockers inspired by the scene when Scrooge’s door knocker turns into Marley’s face (his dead partner in business).
We also wrote diaries about the night Scrooge attended Fezziwig’s gathering. First we boxed up the given diary entry and then chose high-level vocabulary to use in our entries. After we copied it into our writing portfolio, then edited it and added in more detail before we wrote our final copy. In Maths we have been solving multiplication, division, subtraction and additional problems, as well as starting on area and perimeter. In Science we have been learning about shadows and the anatomy of the eye, making diagrams for both subjects. We certainly feel that we have had a busy and productive term in Merlin’s class. It has also been great fun!

This term in Merlins class we have been learning about "The Six Nations"; a competitive rugby tournament that goes on between six countries: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy. So far we have focused on England and Ireland by writing Lonely Planet Guides about both of those particular countries. In preparation of these pieces of writing we have researched these places using Ipads, books and other Lonely Planet Guides written by other people. We are also learning to create a picture each of any of the six countries national animals in art: Welsh Dragon, French Rooster, English Lion, Irish Swan, Scottish Unicorn and the Italian Wolf.
In Literacy, we have been focusing on writing our own information texts on our chosen national animal from one of the six nation countries for our cultural cafe. We started this process by researching our chosen animal and planned our own information text.
Meanwhile, in English our main focus has been writing newspaper reports which led onto balanced arguments. We have also been researching an old English king named Ethelred The Unready, who had 13 children,(8 sons and 5 daughters).
In Maths, Year 5’s have been focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages. In the past couple of weeks, they have been finding percentages of amounts as well as remembering how to find 1% all the way up to 99%.
Also, in Maths, Year 6’s have been focusing on ratio, proportion and algebra. Year 6 have been rewarded with a box of smarties shared between two after calculating ratio and proportion based sums!
In our topic books, we have been looking at hearts, we labelled our diagrams by guessing and correcting the
right parts of this detailed part of our bodies. We had to know how the circulatory system works and use our knowledge of the heart to create this fun and piece of science.
The most enjoyable and exiting part of this term that the majority of children loved was iSingPop – a pop music company with all songs relating to the bible – this music company involved lots of fun actions during the sessions!
