Our bookworms in KS2 were recently given the wonderful opportunity to talk to a real-life published author! Abi Elphinstone has written three books and has recently secured a film deal for The Dreamsnatcher; you can watch the trailer on her website (the link is below).
Abi seemed as delighted to meet the children as they were to see her and thrilled them with exciting stories about her adventures. Having grown up in Scotland, Abi spent most of her time hiding in treehouses, building dens and sleeping under the stars with her siblings. Her adventurous spirit never left her and she talked about how her diverse and exciting experiences as an adult have also inspired her writing; from her time spent with Romany Gypsies to studying wildcats in the wild and even hang gliding from off the top of a mountain!
As well as inspiring the children with tales of her exploits, Abi also gave them an important message – “never give up!” It took her 96 rejections before she got her book deal and now she has written a trilogy of books and has just secured a film deal.
Mrs Bowditch arranged and organised the visit as part of her focus on literacy in the school. She said: “Abi was funny, energetic and genuinely happy to come to the school. The children absolutely loved her and many of them bought her books, which I’ve seen in almost all the KS2 classrooms now being read by individuals.”
Abi was as impressed by the children as they were by her, as she commented on how wonderful they are and what great questions they came up with. Apparently she was also wowed by their iSingPOP singing as she came into the hall! Like the iSingPOP concert, this is one experience the children won’t quickly forget.
