Today saw the last Open the Book assembly of the school year. The story 'On the road to Emmaus' picks up where we left off last week and tells of two friends who were walking and talking about what they'd seen in Jerusalem and the crucifixion of Jesus. (The children joined in the actions for 'walking' and 'talking'.) They were joined in their travels by a man they didn't recognise and filled him in on all that had happened in the previous days. They were so sure Jesus was the Special One of God, but after his death, they were devastated. The man explained to them that what had happened proved Jesus was the Special One, and it had been foretold by the prophets. The friends invited the man to eat with them, and when he blessed and broke the bread, they realised it was not just any traveller but Jesus himself! They were thrilled and ran back to Jerusalem to tell all the other followers of Jesus the amazing news that Jesus was alive again.
